In several dermatoses the number of mast cells was counted. Histologically and clinically confirmed 9 cases of discoid lupus erythematosus, 8 cases of cutaneous tuberculosis, 8 cases of psoriasis, 7 cases of morphea, 4 cases of erythema, nodosum, 3 cases of drug eruption, 2 cases each of verruca, pigmented nevus skin, cancer, neurofibromatosis and molluscum contagiosum were selected for this purpose. Toluidine blue staining was employed. The number of mast cells in the skin of 7 normal people was used as control. 1. In all dprmatoses examined, especially in neurofibromatosis and in tuberculosis verrucosa cutis, the number of mast cells was increased. 2. In discoid lupus erythematosus, psoriasis and morphea a tendency was noted that the more intense the inflammatory reaction of the lesion was the higher was the rate of increase in number of mast cells.
